Such Great Heights

Where am I? Triacastela
How far did I walk today? 28.9 km / 17.9 miles

I started the day with the last big climb – an 1800 foot ascent. It was steep and difficult, but it was manageable because it was first thing in the morning. I had more trouble with a smaller climb later in the day that the guidebook undersold.

During lunch, I met with two guys in the Danish army. They were very nice, and I really liked them when they were surprised I was 28 – nobody underestimates my age!

In my ignorance, I sort of expected their unit was entirely for defensive purposes, like the Swiss. Yet when I asked if they ever get stationed overseas, they said most of their comrades served in Afghanistan. Denmark is a member of NATO. They were younger, so the mission ended just before they enlisted. The Danish still sends out military advisers in various hot spots though.

I’m meeting several other people I had not met earlier and running into some other old friends. Even though some friends are ahead or behind me, it sounds like most people are going to be in Santiago for the festival next week. I can’t wait!
